Uses of Manganese

Manganese removes oxygen and sulfur when iron ore (an iron and oxygen compound) is converted into iron. It is also essential as one of the constituents that converts iron into steel. This would have been the primary use when Tremollet mine was active. Modern uses for manganese are also as an alloy with metals such as aluminum and copper; some non-metallurgical uses include battery cathodes, soft ferrites used in electronics, micronutrients in agriculture and water treatment chemicals, it is also used a colouring agent for metallic paints, bricks, glass, textiles, tiles, plastics and even cosmetics.

The two images at the top of this page show two manganese ores - Pyrolusite and Psilomelane - either side of a map of the area in which Tremollett Mine was located.
